About muughl mâché

Through development of our sister company, Shawl Wallah, we learned about another Kashmir tradition in the form of Papier-mâché handicrafts. We wanted to showcase these individual works of art to the world.

Each elephant is carved out of wood, covered in a layer of Papier-mâché, and hand-painted by one of our artisans. While designs are similar, no two elephants are the same, and each speaks to the volumes of history in the region.

Every elephant is hand-produced, and typically takes between 5-7 days to craft.

"muughl" - what's in a name?

"muughl" or Mughal [moo-gull], pulls from the empire of the same name of which Kashmir was a part of, and of which the culture of Kashmir has been greatly influenced by.
